Back from my mini beach vacation means getting back to your normal everyday routines. Back to your work routine, work-out routine and even your beauty routine. The biggest beauty routine I do not necessarily miss, is doing my hair. Sounding a bit silly but I’ll be honest, I have more bad hair days than good hair days. When I’m normally wearing a wave look, I have to blow-dry, straighten, grab the curling iron, and use at least four products. Unfortunately, washing my hair and going doesn’t work for me. If I let my hair air-dry then walk out the house, my hair immediately falls flat and straight. So I’m bringing a bit of the beach home with me.
Here are my tips for no-heat beachy hair.
Make sure to wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner. Towel dry your hair gently then time to grab your miracle product, It’s A 10. Spray throughout your hair, spraying away from your roots.
After finding your part, with a wide-toothed comb, comb out any knots or tangles.
Time to wait. While waiting for your hair to air dry flip your head over and spray a few sprits of a texturizing wave spray, my favorite is Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray. With your head still flipped over, crunch your hair with your hands.
Once your hair is completely dried, repeat step three. This adds a bit more texture and creates more of a beachy wave.
You are almost done! Time for the finishing touch. Grab your favorite wax, mine is Surf Wax. Rub a little bit of wax on the tips of your fingers, then while your hair is parted how you like, lightly scrunch it at the bottom of your hair!
NOTE: If you accidentally add too much of one of the products you used while creating your no-heat beachy wave, fear not. Grab your dry shampoo, add a few sprits and you’ll be good to go. This step will also add more volume.
This tiny 1 oz. can of moisturizing creme, has become a secret beauty weapon of mine. Ever have an impromptu sleep over? Or as the night goes on, find your makeup smudging under your eyes? Well, it happens to the best of us. I make sure this is always in my clutch or purse. It’s moisturizing creme but I also use it as a makeup remover when I don’t have any on me. If I sleep by my boyfriends house and forget my makeup remover, this saves me from looking like a raccoon in the morning.
Tarte Amazonian Clay BB cream
This product actually started off as my sisters, but I’ve been using it so much that she thoughtfully said that I could have it. It’s perfect for those days when you don’t feel like putting much makeup on, but still need a little coverage. Perfect while your on vacation thanks to the SPF 20 formula.
Simply perfect for contouring. I have tons of darker colors for contouring but I have a hard time finding highlighters that actually work. This Nars stick is perfect and it is unbelievably easy to apply. The color I own is “Copacabana.”
This months beauty buys surrounds my recent weekend beach trip that I took at the beginning of the month. I only brought a few essential makeup items that kept me not only feeling confident but also kept me from a sunburn.
1. Clinique Even Better
Normally when Im on the beach I stay away from a ton of makeup, especially foundation. But ever since I found Clinique’s Even Better foundation, I make sure to always put on a light amount before heading out to the beach. The SPF 15 is perfect for being out in the sun. On our second beach day we stayed on the beach for over 5 hours and although my right thigh may have burned a bit, my face was perfectly fine. As I get older sunscreen in my makeup products is becoming much more important than it used to me.
2. Banana Boat Ultra Defense
Going to the beach, grab the sunscreen. This water resistant and sunscreen is without a doubt one of my favorites.
3. Waterproof Mascara
I picked up this mascara when I was grabbing some beach necessities at Target. The mascara that I normally use is not waterproof so I wanted to get something that I could wear on the beach or at the pool and not having running down my face.
4. Facial Moisturizer
Normally, the second I put moisturizer on my face becomes oily and begins to break out. It’s really ridiculous! But I think I have finally found my match! I’ve always used Cetaphil’s body moisturizers and face wash but never their facial moisturizer.
Jemma Kidd’s Make-up Secrets
Growing up I was never that little girl gawking at herself in the mirror playing with makeup. Never being interested in makeup until later in life meant many trial and errors. Knowing that I wasn’t born with the magic touch, I’ve had to self teach myself. After watching multiple makeup tutorials on YouTube I’d like to say I’m not half bad. Recently I purchased Jemma Kidd’s Makeup Secrets book and it gives multiple tips on the basics of makeup. From smokey eyes to contouring this book has it all.
MAC Hang Up
Moody, Plum-like & Mysterious. These words come to mind whenever I see this shade of lipstick. It was my first intense dark shade of lipstick I purchased years ago. The other day I while passing MAC I remembered the moody color and purchased it asap.
Clear Elastic Holders
As you can tell in my recent style post, Easy Festival Style, it’s back to short hair. After a much needed hair cut,I forgot how difficult it can be to simply put my hair in a pony tail. Having an angled “lob” (long bob) all of my hair ties are too large to actually use. I found these tiny clear elastic hair ties that make putting short hair up much much much easier.
Hard to find, but certainly worth it. I’ve read reviews about this wax before and I am so happy I finally gave in and purchased it. This is my go to product for beachy waves.
RUSK Dry Shampoo I’ve tried a ton of dry shampoos and have found a few favorites, including this one. Unlike most dry shampoos it does not have any tint to it. Tip? After spraying the dry shampoo, run your fingers through your hair while blow drying it. This step will give you tons of fullness and volume.
Urban Decay Mascara The first time I used this mascara was when I first received the On The Run Palette. This product gives me an incredible long lash without any clumps.
Essie Polish Essie’s “Bobbing for Baubles.” I’ve always liked darker nails so this blackish navy color is perfect.
Sephora Lip Liner Sephora’s Nano Lip Liner is the perfect on-the-go liner. I have a few of these colors but my favorite is “Lovely Lilac.” I use this color as a base for a dark red lip look.
There is nothing better than a good red lip. You could be wearing a simple outfit, but add a red lip and BAM!
Here are my tips for the perfect long lasting red lip:
1. Before application, apply lip balm and gently exfoliate lips.
2. Dab lip primer (or concealer) on lips.
3. Apply Lipliner: Define the shape of your lips by making an “x” at the Cupid’s bow. Then connect the corners, so your lips are completely lined. Fill in your lips with the lipliner.
4. Carefully apply lipstick. I recommend applying with a lip brush.
5. Dap lips with tissue paper. This step is important because it will help the lipstick stay on longer.
6. Repeat steps 4 & 5. (For even longer wear, I will apply a very light coat of Lime Crime’s Red Velvet. Do this step and your lipstick will stay on all night, even after a few kisses.) Lightly brush a translucent mineral powder over lips and done!
My go to reds? Kat Von D’s Hexagram, Urban Decay’s Lipstick Revolution F-Bomb and Lime Crime’s Red Velvet
What are yours?
Kat Von D Studded Lipstick in matte rich violet
As Mardi Gras approached this year, I was searching high and low for a few festive looks. I’ve always wanted to try a purple lipstick, but was a bit timid. Once I saw this matte violet by Kat Von D, I fell in love. Now not only will I be wearing it during every Mardi Gras but don’t be surprised if you see me wearing it over the weekend.
Elizabeth and James Nirvana White
Normally I stick with Prada Candy perfume but once I ran out I purchased the Elizabeth and James Nirvana White roll-on perfume. With a much stronger scent than Prada Candys clean floral scent, Nirvana White may be a closer runner-up as my new signature scent.
This.is.simply.awesome. Perfect for applying makeup and contouring. I have seen these before but never really thought it would make that much of a difference in makeup application. I purchased one for contouring purposes and I am so happy I did!
Stila All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner
To be honest…I have had this liquid eyeliner for a while. I never used it until recently (due to my horrible skills in perfecting winged eyeliner…I am slowly getting better though, promise.) and now I am using it constantly. The smooth application does smudge and lasts literally all day.
I have spoken in previous posts about my facial acne scars and I can honestly say that I have never used a facial product better than this one. This is by far one of the best facial scrubs I have ever used. The beads in the microdermabrasion scrub are unlike most scrubs. Use it with a Clarisonic and watch your acne scars slowly diminish. This is now one of my all time favorite beauty products.
Urban Decay On The Run Palette
I use this palette everyday. I love wearing neutral eye shadows and a dark lip color, which this palette is perfect for.
For Christmas my cousin bought me a ton of new hair stuff to try, luckily this was one of the products she introduced me to. Living in New Orleans, there is always humidity but this does Biomega GLOW does the trick. It also gives my hair a finished shiny look.
Benefit’s Stay Flawless 15 Hour Primer
I used to use Smashbox’s Photo Finish primer but I always thought it was super heavy. Changing things up I tried Benefit’s Stay Flawless 15 Hour Primer and I fell in love. I love that it is a stick so it’s super easy to put on and it is also light and airy feeling.
RUSK Freezing Spray
This hairspray is perfection. Anti-humidity and no build up.
BareMinerals Mineral Veil
BareMinerals Mineral Veil is the perfect finishing touch to your makeup look. I like to put it over my lips as well so my lipstick lasts longer.
Recently I have been receiving a lot of questions about the makeup I use. I will be the first to say that I am not a professional makeup artist (no where near it to be exact.) But I do enjoy trying out new beauty products and playing around with them to see what works on me. Here are my favorite everyday products that I use, enjoy!
FACE: Before putting anything on my face I use Benefit’s Stay Flawless 15 Hour Primer. It is also tinted so it tones any redness. Since this is for an everyday look, I skip the foundation (I’m a fan of Clinique.) I try to stay away from wearing liquid foundation everyday to give my skin a break. I then use Benefit’s Hello Flawless Powder. The SPF 15 powder foundation is by far my favorite. Of all of the compact powders I have used, this is the best.
EYES: I just received the Naked On The Run Palette and I’ve been using it nonstop. Normally I’d use Urban Decay’s Naked Palette but I changed it up a bit ever since I started using this one. I use the nude beige color for my eyes along with the eye liner and mascara that comes along with the palette.
LIPS: I’m a sucker for a red lip but for a everyday look I like to stick to something a bit simple. Before I apply lip liner, I exfoliate my lips and then apply the primer again. I use Chanel Precision Lip Definer and Chanel Rouge Allure in Envoûtante.
FINISHING TOUCHES: For contouring and blush I also use the Urban Decay On The Run Palette. For blending and just an all over touch I apply Bare Minerals Mineral Veil Finishing Powder.
Chanel Le Crayon Lèvres Precision Lip Definer
Recently my boyfriend surprised me with what every girl wants, a little bit of Chanel. Knowing that Im constantly obsessing over lipstick, he surprised me with Rouge Allure Envoûtante and the Precision Lip Definer. The lipstick shade is a beautiful robust pink with a slight shimmer. But I must say that my absolute favorite is the Precision Lip Definer in the shade Tulip. Matching the color of my lips, it is the perfect for that pouty look that everyone wants right now. The Precision Lip Definer also comes with a built in brush and sharpener to perfect looks.
OPI Sleigh Parking Only
Lately I’ve been trying to change it up a bit in the nail polish department. Life is simply too short to be too serious about nail polish. Gwen Stefani’s Sleigh Parking is the perfect dark burgundy. And not to mention, I would probably buy anything with Gwen Stefani’s name on it.
I never understood the whole fancy shampoo thing. I would try super expensive shampoos from salons and never felt like my hair was that much different. That was until I started using Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Wild Ginger Moisturizing Lather Shampoo. My hair dresser introduced me to this due to my somewhat damaged ends, and I after a few days I could already feel a difference. Normally my hair would turn greasy if I strayed away from washing it everyday, but with this product I can go much longer. The bottle that I have is 8.5 oz, but this shampoo also comes in 33.8 oz.
If you have not heard or Lime Crime yet, you may have been living under a rock. Lime Crime’s Velvetines line is basically awesome (that is pretty much the best word to describe it.) The matted velvet finished look is incredible. This may not be an every day look for some of you, but the Red Velvet adds a drastic pop to any outfit. My biggest tip to achieve a finished matte look is to gently exfoliate lips (always remember to do this step or the lipstick may become cakey.) After exfoliating use a lipliner to line lips and carefully apply the lipstick. Fix mistakes and add concealer around your lips to help spreading.
Bye Bye Blemish
Bye Bye Blemish has been a beauty secret of mine for years, but for a short while the retailer that supplied the product stopped suppling it. To say I was devastated is an understatement. That was until recently when I stumbled upon it at Ulta! If a blemish pops up, simply apply the drying lotion and it’s gone in the morning! I use this product religiously.
